world pain: A casual way to describe a newborn’s general discomfort or fussiness as they adjust to life outside the womb.

5 S's: A set of five soothing techniques for newborns: swaddling, side‑lying, swaying, sucking, and shushing.

swaddling: Snugly wrapping a baby in a blanket to help them feel secure and reduce startle reflex.

side-lying: Holding the baby on their side (facing out) along your forearm with a supportive grip, often used to calm fussiness.

swaying: Rhythmic side‑to‑side movement to soothe a baby; here, done fairly vigorously.

suckle: The baby’s action of sucking for comfort; can be on a caregiver’s finger or a pacifier.

pacifier: A rubber or silicone nipple that babies can suck on for comfort.

shushing: Making a loud, steady “shh” sound near the baby’s ear to mimic womb-like noise and promote calming.
