common.months_ago
The technique for latching a baby onto the breast involves positioning the baby with its nose to the nipple. To facilitate latching, two fingers are used to compress the breast, forming a 'sandwich,' while simultaneously tilting the nipple upwards towards the roof of the baby's mouth. This alignment helps the baby achieve a better position for latching, requiring the baby to open wide and move onto the breast.
breast: The milk-producing part of the chest used to feed a baby.
nipple: The protruding part of the breast that goes into the baby’s mouth during feeding.
palate: The roof of the mouth. Pointing the nipple toward the palate helps the baby latch more easily.
latch on: How a baby attaches to the breast to feed. A wide, deep latch is more comfortable and effective.
nose to nipple: A positioning cue where the baby’s nose lines up with the nipple to encourage a wide mouth and deep latch.
