What is unexplained infertility?

Unexplained infertility is when no cause for infertility can be found after basic tests for both partners. It accounts for about 20 to 30% of infertility cases. In the past, more tests were often performed, but many did not help and are no longer used. Currently, only helpful core tests are done. If all tests are normal, treatment options such as timed intercourse, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and IVF are discussed based on evidence, considering their success rates, risks, and costs to make the best choice for each couple.
Unexplained infertility: A type of infertility where no cause can be found after standard testing in both partners.
Intrauterine insemination: A procedure that places washed sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation to increase the chances of fertilization.
IVF: In vitro fertilization, a procedure where eggs are fertilized by sperm outside the body and the resulting embryo is placed in the uterus.
Timed intercourse: Having sexual intercourse during the woman’s ovulation period to maximize the chance of pregnancy.
